West Monroe's 2024 consumer study pegged the average American at $219 a month in subscriptions. Most of us guess $80. The gap is the vampire: small, warm-blooded charges that drain a $2,628-a-year hole. Here is how to run an audit that actually kills them.

Why subscriptions get away

Apple and Google designed billing to be invisible. Monthly charges under $15 do not trigger our fraud radar. Annual renewals hit once, post screen-lock, and scroll off the notification shade by morning. Free trials turn into paid subscriptions because the calendar reminder was for a Tuesday three months ago. Every vampire survives on one thing: you forgetting it exists.

The 30-minute audit

Block 30 minutes. Open three tabs.

  1. iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions. This catches every App Store sub.
  2. Bank/credit card statements for the last 90 days. Search for recurring amounts ending in .99 or .00.
  3. PayPal, Amazon, and your browser's saved cards for outside-the-App-Store subs (news, SaaS, gym, cloud storage).

List every subscription in Plan! as a recurring Expense. Tag each one with traffic-light colours: green (used weekly), yellow (used once a month), red (have not opened in 60 days). Kill all reds immediately. Downgrade yellows to annual or free tiers. Keep only greens.

Track the survivors in Plan!

The mistake most audit guides miss is what happens after. Without tracking, zombie subs grow back within six months. Plan! solves this with recurring transactions: create an Expense goal called "Subscriptions" and log each survivor as a repeating entry with the renewal date. The Forecast engine predicts a charge spike two days before it lands, and the lock screen widget puts the running monthly total in your face.

  • Netflix Standard: $15.49, 1st of the month, green.
  • iCloud 200GB: $2.99, 14th, green.
  • Gym: $49, 1st, yellow (visit twice a month, downgrade to day-pass?).
  • News app free trial converting next Sunday: cancel today.
Cancelling just three zombie subs saves $432 a year. That is a round-trip to Mexico City, or 86 lattes, or a year of Plan! Lifetime with $352 left over.

The annual renewal trick

Many services give 15-20% off for switching from monthly to annual. The trick only works if you are 100% sure you will keep it for a year. Use Plan!'s yearly view: if the service has been green for 9 consecutive months, annual is a win. Otherwise stay monthly and keep your exit door open.

Checklist

  1. Block 30 minutes for the audit this weekend.
  2. Pull subs from iPhone Settings, bank, PayPal, Amazon.
  3. Tag each green/yellow/red in Plan!.
  4. Cancel all reds today.
  5. Set recurring transactions in Plan! for every survivor.
  6. Re-audit every six months.

The vampires hate daylight. Plan! turns the lights on and keeps them on.
