Typing numbers one-handed while walking away from a coffee counter is not a power move. Talking to your phone is. Voice logging cuts capture time from 8 seconds to 1.5, and nine times out of ten it happens before the thought leaves your head. Here are the ten Siri commands that matter and how to wire them up in Plan!.
Why voice for finance
Three reasons voice wins where buttons lose. First, ambient capture: you are holding groceries or driving and still need to log $14.30. Second, CarPlay and AirPods: no screen required. Third, the Watch: its keyboard is a puzzle, its microphone is not. Logging rate roughly doubles once Siri is wired in.
The ten commands that actually help
- "Hey Siri, add $12 to groceries."
- "Hey Siri, log $45 dinner."
- "Hey Siri, add €30 to travel."
- "Hey Siri, what's my balance?" (plays the home currency total)
- "Hey Siri, how much is left in dining?"
- "Hey Siri, add $500 to emergency fund."
- "Hey Siri, transfer $100 from wants to savings." (Plan! runs the transfer)
- "Hey Siri, log rent." (recurring preset)
- "Hey Siri, show my goals." (opens Plan!)
- "Hey Siri, did I overspend?" (Forecast engine answers verbally)
Setting up Plan! + Siri
Plan! exposes every goal and action as an App Intent, which is Apple's replacement for the old Shortcuts framework. Siri learns your phrasing from the first use. You do not have to record a custom phrase for every command; "add $X to Y" works out of the box for every goal name you have created.
- Open Plan! → Settings → Siri & Shortcuts.
- Tap "Add to Siri" next to each action you want. The most common ones (Add Expense, Check Balance, Transfer) are one tap.
- Optionally record a custom phrase: Settings → Siri & Search → Plan! → Shortcuts → "Add Expense" → record.
- Test with "Hey Siri, add $5 to groceries." You should hear a haptic confirmation and see the update in the Plan! widget.
Voice capture reduces expense-logging friction by 80%. The app you talk to is the app you keep using.
Power move: Shortcuts automation
The Shortcuts app on iOS lets you chain Plan! intents with other apps. Three automations worth building:
- When connected to CarPlay, offer "log fuel expense" as a suggestion.
- When you receive a Venmo notification, pop a shortcut to log it to the right category.
- Every Sunday at 8 p.m., run "Weekly review": Plan! speaks the Forecast engine's summary out loud.
The CarPlay tip no one talks about
Plan! Siri commands also work from CarPlay. Driving home from Costco, say "Hey Siri, add $186 to groceries." The confirmation plays through the car stereo. You never touch your phone. No other iOS budget app in our test matched the full command set through CarPlay.
Checklist
- Open Plan! Settings → Siri & Shortcuts.
- Activate at least three intents: Add Expense, Check Balance, Transfer.
- Test each while holding something in the other hand.
- Set up the Sunday weekly-review automation in Shortcuts.
- Try it from CarPlay on your next drive home.
Talking to your phone about money feels odd for one day. On day two, the typing stops and never comes back. Plan! is built to listen.
