Senator Elizabeth Warren published the 50/30/20 rule in 2005, and two decades later it still outperforms every fancy spreadsheet I have seen. Three buckets, one paycheck, no PhD required. Here is how it works and how to run it in Plan! in under ten minutes.

What 50/30/20 actually means

You take your after-tax income and split it three ways: 50% on needs, 30% on wants, 20% on savings and debt payoff. On a $4,200 monthly take-home, that is $2,100 for rent, groceries, utilities and transport. $1,260 goes to restaurants, streaming, hobbies and travel. The last $840 builds your emergency fund, Roth IRA, or extra mortgage payment.

The rule's genius is how it draws the line. Netflix is a want, even if it feels essential. Groceries are a need, but the $18 cold-pressed juice is a want. If you cannot pay rent without the 20% bucket, your needs are eating the plan and something has to move.

Three myths, busted

  • "20% is impossible on my salary." It is a target, not a tax. Start at 5%, raise it one percentage point every three months. Most people hit 20% inside two years.
  • "Debt belongs in needs." Minimum payments are needs. Anything extra goes in the 20% bucket because it builds your future net worth.
  • "I need to track every coffee." You do not. The rule works at the category level, not the receipt level. Plan! does that heavy lifting automatically.

Set up 50/30/20 in Plan! in 10 minutes

Open Plan! and create three Expense goals, one per bucket. Name them Needs, Wants, and Savings, set the monthly target to the right percentage of your paycheck, and pick a colour for each. When you log a transaction, tap the right bucket. The Forecast engine projects your month-end balance and flags the bucket likely to overshoot.

  1. Open Plan!, tap the plus button, choose Expense goal type.
  2. Set Needs to 50% of your monthly income, repeat for Wants (30%) and Savings (20%).
  3. Turn on notifications so Plan! pings you when a bucket hits 80%.
  4. Add the Plan! home-screen widget to see all three bars at a glance.
Americans who use a written budget save 19% more per year than those who wing it. Plan! writes it for you.

When the rule should bend

High-cost cities like New York or San Francisco push needs to 60% without apology. Parents of young children often run 55/25/20. Freelancers with irregular income should budget off their lowest three months, not the average. The rule is a starting scaffold, not a straitjacket. Adjust the percentages in Plan! any time; the Spotify-style yearly report shows whether your tweaks actually moved the needle.

Checklist

  1. Calculate your monthly after-tax income.
  2. Multiply by 0.5, 0.3, and 0.2 to get three targets.
  3. Create three Expense goals in Plan! with those numbers.
  4. Add the widget to your home screen.
  5. Review the Forecast engine every Sunday night.

Ten minutes of setup, one decision per transaction, and your paycheck finally has a job description. Open Plan! and give it one.
